Happy birthday Joy! (aka Joy The Baker)
You have yourself some pretty smart parents. Of all the names they could have chosen for you exactly 30 years ago today, they picked the perfect name for you! You really are just that…Joy. You are one of those special people that brings happiness with your presence and words. People can’t help themselves but smile when you’re around, be it in person or online.
You truly give so much “joy” to so many every day of the year and I’m happy to call you my friend. I consider myself fortunate that we’re there for one another when one of us needs a pep talk via email or simply a hello to make the day a little brighter and know that someone is thinking about you.
So, because you’re always giving, I thought of all days, this should be the day where you receive. I know hot dogs are one of the great pleasures in your life, so this is my birthday gift to you.
I tried to envision how you’d want to eat hot dogs on your birthday and I figured it would be in cake form! So I came up with a trio of hot dog cakes for you. I envisioned them being Ace of Cakes/Joy The Baker quality, but they turned out a little more “rustic”.
I used you as inspiration to create the various types of frosting. The first one is a White Whisky Cream Cheese Dog. You like whisky and it’s your birthday, so you get whisky, simple as that!
The second one is a Cinnamon Goldschläger Dog and you deserve every single gold fleck that’s in the bottle. (P.S. the green is coconut)
Finally, your last one is an Ice Cider Cream Liqueur Nightcap Dog. After a birthday filled with fun, it’s nice to contemplate the day with a “sipping” type of hot dog.
Happy 30th Birthday Joy! Thank you for being you and may you get everything you deserve in life!
Now close your eyes and make a wish!
A Trio of Hot Dog Cakes
Pound Cake (recipe adapted from The Joy of Cooking)
- 2 cups of cake flour
- 1 teaspoon of salt
- 2 teaspoons of baking powder
- 1/2 teaspoon mace (optional)
- 1 cup of butter
- 1.5 cups of sugar
- 4 eggs
- 1 cup of milk
- 2 teaspoons of vanilla
- Parchment paper
Directions
- Preheat oven to 350F.
- Sift together the flour, salt, baking powder and mace.
- Beat the butter until creamy
- Add sugar and cream until light and fluffy.
- Add one egg at at time and beat well after each one.
- Add the flour mixture alternatively with milk and vanilla until well combined.
- Line the parchment paper in a 9″ loaf pan and pour the batter in.
- Bake for approximately 60 minutes until a toothpick can be inserted and come out clean.
- Let cool on a rack.
- With a serrated knife, slice the loaf widthwise into thirds.
- Carefully shave down both sides to give them a slightly rounded edge (mimicking a hot dog bun).
- Again carefully, place your knife about 1/2″ from the side and cut down (but not all the way) to pull out the middle portion of the bun that will be your hot dog.
- Cut off the edges off of your “hot dog” to slightly round them out.
Boozed-Up Cream Cheese Butter Frosting
- 1/2 cup of cream cheese
- 1/4 cup of butter
- 1/4 cup of powdered sugar
- 1/2 cup of whipping cream
- 1/2 teaspoon of cocoa powder (for hot dog frosting)
- 2 teaspoons of Glenfiddich Malt Whisky Liqueur (for bun frosting)
- 2 teaspoons of Goldschläger (for bun frosting)
- 2 teaspoons of Pinnacle Ice Cider Cream Liqueur (for bun frosting)
- Food coloring
- Combine cream cheese, butter, powdered sugar and whipping cream together and beat on medium until well combined.
- Increase to high and beat until firm peaks have formed.
- Separate the frosting into 4 seperate bowls.
- Add cocoa powder to the first bowl of frosting and mix well with a spoon.
- Add liqueurs (and food coloring if you choose) to the other bowls and mix well with a spoon.
- Cover and let chill in the fridge for approximately two hours.
- Apply frosting to the bun and hot dog.
- Garnish, serve and enjoy!

Thanks for the offer Greg. She has seen them and has thanked me for them, but you can give her a birthday hug for me. And to answer your question…January 16. Now I need to find out your birthday?

You have nearly a whole year to come up with a twist on macarons for my birthday next year….
I better get working on figuring out how to make macarons in the first place:P
What a fun and fantastic treat! See, to me… this… is worth more than something that can be bought. So much more personable and made from the heart.
